Mathletes crush the odds at U.S. Olympiad

Two Phillips Academy students earned coveted honors in the USA Mathematics Olympiad (USAMO). Guanpeng (Andy) Xu ’19, of Simpsonville, SC, was one of the twelve USAMO winners. William Yue ’22, of Andover, MA, earned Honorable Mention on the USA Mathematical Junior Olympiad (USAJMO). Andy and Khiem DoBa, instructor in mathematics and team coach, were honored at an award ceremony held June 3 at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.
Each year more than 300,000 high school students from around the world participate in the American Mathematics Competitions. This year 50 students from Andover competed in these early rounds, 26 advanced to the second round, and 7 qualified for the USAMO or USAJMO. The final competitions are six-question, two-day, nine-hour essay/proof examinations.
Congratulations to all Phillips Academy “mathletes” on another successful season, capped by this final tournament.
