Bringing iconic campus buildings to life
Student artist enjoys creative challengeby Nancy Hitchcock
This year, most students, staff, and faculty at Andover will hold in their hands artwork created by Yoojung "Claris" Shin ’25. A four-year senior, Shin designed the covers for both the 2024–2025 academic planner and the campus directory, leaving her artistic mark on two essential pieces of campus life.
“I wanted to use my skills for the greater good of the Andover community,” says Shin.
The colorful covers capture Andover’s spirit. They evoke warmth and familiarity by depicting Cochran Chapel on the planner and Samuel Phillips Hall on The Directory using a simple, polished style with soothing tones.
“I spent time scrolling through my photo album to find iconic campus landmarks and photo zones that resonate with the entire Andover community,” says Shin. “For this series of cover designs, I aimed to evoke the style of a vintage postcard drawing, incorporating an antique, grainy texture. I also limited the color palette of the work to create a sense of harmony and cohesion throughout the design.”

Shin’s creative process began with sketches before she finalized the pieces using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
As long as the artist can remember, she has been passionate about drawing, sketching, painting, and doodling. She even attended one of the top art middle schools in Korea.
“As my passion evolved, I became interested in how art interacts with other fields like history and social science, offering new ways of interpreting the world,” she explains.
“That’s what led me to Andover. I've come to understand that art is not only about mastering technical skills, but also about constantly exploring, interpreting, reflecting, and creatively challenging myself.”
Beyond traditional mediums like painting and illustration, Shin is also delving into technology-based art forms such as videography and graphic design. She has created logos and cover designs for PA clubs and organizations and is an illustration editor for The Phillipian.
Looking ahead, Shin imagines that art will play a significant role in her future, whether continuing exploration in painting and illustration or expanding into new mediums.
“I love art for its versatility and universality,” says Shin. “I like to explore new things, connect the dots, and am eager to create something new every day.”
