The Lead

Gendler Peace Circle, Addison Artist Council, and Andover giving societies

Nestled in the pine grove next to Cochran Chapel, the Gendler Peace Circle is the newest place for reflection on Andover Hill. Family, friends, and community members gathered in September to dedicate this stone memorial in honor of Rabbi Everett Gendler P’83, ’86, Andover’s first Jewish chaplain. A group of donors, led by Joe Tatelbaum ’78 and Jana Paley ’81, made this endeavor possible. The monument pays tribute to the inspiring campus icon who mentored countless students—of all faith backgrounds—and advances his timeless lessons of inclusion, intellectual curiosity, and kindness.

The Addison Gallery has long been known for introducing the world to notable artists like Sheila Hicks and Dawoud Bey. With the launch of the Addison Artist Council, patrons can now help select the emerging talents featured in certain exhibitions, residencies, and acquisitions, continuing a legacy of “firsts.” This innovative program offers donors a hands-on role in shaping the future of contemporary art, with opportunities at multiple giving levels.

Membership has its benefits, and more than 6,300 alumni, families, and friends are part of Andover’s giving societies. Each provides special advantages to those who are enrolled automatically through their philanthropy. In October, Athletics Director Lisa Joel led a panel of current and former student-athletes who addressed the program’s bright future in a virtual forum with members of the Bulfinch Loyalty Society and the Samuel Phillips & Sarah Abbot Society. Similarly, Non Sibi Circle members are invited to meet with Jim Ventre ’79, assistant head of school for admission and financial aid, in January.
