Final wave goodbye
Officer Wendy retires after nearly 30 years at PAby Allyson Irish
She was the friendly face you saw when walking to the chapel for All-School Meeting—always with a smile and a kind word. And if the weather was cold, she would usually be wearing bright yellow mittens! Officer Wendy Cogswell was one of a kind and will be missed dearly by the Andover community.
During her lengthy tenure with the Campus Safety Office, Cogswell became one of the most well-known figures at PA. In addition to her work as a campus safety officer, Cogswell took part in numerous community events including the evening reading hour at the OWHL for faculty and staff children, teaching classes for CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, and chaperoning the prom.
“Wendy was always out there digging in where needed, no matter the task,” says Director of Campus Safety Mark Leonard.
Cogswell also served as the campus safety community relations officer and most recently was the senior campus safety officer, helping to implement new practices, reporting methods, officer training, and scheduling.
Just as Cogswell stayed busy with her job and activities at PA, so too does she plan to spend her retirement, which she has dubbed “here, there, and everywhere.”
“I plan to travel, take photos, and visit with family and friends,” Cogswell says. “The list goes on!”
And don’t be surprised if you see Cogswell on campus occasionally; she is planning to work as a per diem safety officer as needed.

What is your favorite Andover memory?
I have two favorite memories: meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former first lady Barbara Bush. Archbishop Tutu was a welcoming, kind human being. He had done a large amount of anti-apartheid work in a troubling time in South Africa. Mrs. Bush accompanied the president on his final visit to campus. That was such a wonderful experience for me. I admired her strength, dedication, and spirit.
If you were not a public safety officer, what would you do?
I have a love for photography. It is a way to go on "the road less travelled." I have taken photos all around our country. I am in awe of Mother Nature's beauty, and I enjoy taking photos of historical places.
What advice would you give a new campus safety officer?
Be open-minded, take the time to say “hello,” be respectful to all, and take time for yourself.
How would you describe your job in five words?
Awesome, wicked, protective, enjoyable, and educational.
What will you miss most? Least?
I will miss all the amazing folks that I have met during my 28 years. It's so cool when I work Opening of School, Commencement, and Reunion. I see former students who still call me Officer Wendy and the reconnection is great. I will least miss my daily commute to Andover.
If you had a signature dish at Paresky Commons, what would it be?
I'm a lover of tater tots so my signature dish would be called "Spud Nuggets!"
